1. Nature of the Relationship
I, [Your Name], am a professional Life Coach operating under the business name [Your Business Name]. I am not a licensed psychotherapist, psychologist, medical doctor, or attorney. The services I provide are Life Coaching, which is distinct from therapy, psychological counseling, psychiatric care, or legal advice.
2. Coaching vs. Psychotherapy
Life Coaching is a collaborative, future-oriented process focused on personal and professional development, goal setting, and creating actionable strategies to achieve your desired outcomes. It is based on Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) principles and techniques adapted for a coaching context.
Psychotherapy (or therapy/counseling) is a health service focused on diagnosing and treating mental illness, emotional disorders, and processing past trauma. It often involves deep exploration of the past to understand and heal psychological wounds.
Our coaching sessions will not involve the diagnosis or treatment of mental health disorders. Coaching is not a substitute for psychotherapy, and I am not qualified to provide such services.
3. Scope of Practice
If during our work together, we uncover issues that would be better served by psychotherapy (such as clinical depression, severe anxiety, trauma, or other mental health conditions), it is my ethical duty to bring this to your attention and recommend that you seek the support of a licensed mental health professional. I can provide a referral upon request, and we may pause our coaching engagement until you have secured the appropriate support.
4. Assumption of Responsibility & No Guarantee
You, the client, are entirely responsible for your own physical, mental, and emotional well-being during the coaching process, as well as the decisions and actions you take as a result of our work. Life Coaching results are not guaranteed. The effectiveness of the coaching process relies heavily on your own motivation, openness, and commitment to the process.
5. Confidentiality
Your privacy is important. Our conversations will be held confidential. However, there are specific limits to confidentiality where I may be legally obligated to break confidentiality, including:
If there is an imminent risk of harm to yourself or others.
Suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elderly person, or dependent adult.
If I am required by a court order to disclose information.
